The Queen’s House was commissioned by Anne of Denmark, the wife of King James I of England, in the early 17th century. It was designed by the renowned English architect Inigo Jones and was one of the first classical buildings in England.
Construction of the Queen’s House began in 1616 but was interrupted due to financial constraints and the death of Queen Anne in 1619. It remained unfinished for several decades.
In the mid-17th century, during the reign of King Charles II, the Queen’s House was completed and became a residence for queens consort, including Queen Henrietta Maria and Queen Catherine of Braganza.
One of the most famous features of the Queen’s House is the “Tulip Stairs,” an elegant spiral staircase that is considered one of the earliest examples of a cantilevered staircase in England. It is named for the tulip-shaped motifs in the ironwork.

Don’t miss the Painted Hall, often called the ‘Sistine Chapel of the UK’ due to its stunning painted ceiling.
The rich history dated back to the 16th century when it began as a Tudor palace. In the 17th century, it was a favored residence of King Charles II and the birthplace of the Royal Observatory, pivotal in the development of navigation. In 1694, Queen Mary II transformed it into the Royal Hospital for Seamen, offering care to retired sailors.
By the 19th century, it had morphed into the Royal Naval College, a renowned institution for training naval officers. Even during World War II, it continued its educational mission despite sustaining damage. In 1998, after more than three centuries of naval education, the college closed due to naval restructuring.
